Space Sciences

The Earth from space

The mission of the Department of Space Sciences is to educate Museum visitors and our local community with accurate and scientifically sound information regarding space sciences. We accomplish this through communication of up-to-date space sciences information through the Space Odyssey exhibition and public programming.

The department has three curators and a content specialist with expertise in planetary science, space science, astrobiology, and astrophysics. Curators specialize in the interaction between the surface and atmosphere of Mars (utilizing spacecraft and telescopic observations), space science data visualization techniques, surface and atmospheric evolution of Earth-like planets, telescope capabilities (especially infrared), telescope instrument development, outflows from young stars, star formation, and observational astrophysics.

Most of the department's collections are digital and are maintained by a collections manager. The Space Sciences Newsroom is a digital media center with staff and volunteers who produce and maintain a collection of up-to-date resources used in Space Odyssey and space sciences programming.

Collections

The space science digital collections include images, animations, movies, interviews, and departmental research. Current strengths include topics which support and relate to the Space Odyssey experience.
