The Henry C. Toll Collection consists of nearly 300 sketches, with their associated notes and archives, of scores of Native American dances from New Mexico and Arizona. An artist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Toll focused his efforts between 1968 and 1991 on documenting Puebloan ritual life.
Toll's sketches constitute a real contribution to Southwestern ethnology. They also inspire important questions about the reproduction and control of sacred knowledge. Hence, this project involves cataloguing and documenting the sketches, while opening a dialogue with Native communities about questions of intellectual property rights. The project has been generously funded by Lydia and Hank Toll.
