Replicas of Mummy Skull on Display in Egyptian Mummies Exhibit

Facial reconstruction of the Museum's rich woman's mummyMedical Modeling LLC, a Golden-based company, is putting a new face on the art of mummification, using modern technology to bring the ancient past to life.

Replicas of a 3,000-year-old mummy’s skull, along with a detailed facial reconstruction are now on display in Egyptian Mummies at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. The models were produced by Medical Modeling using high-resolution computed tomography (CT) scans that provide a detailed view of what has been kept under wraps for millennia.

How close is the final facial reconstruction, done using a published forensic technique, to the mummy’s original appearance?

“That’s a bit of a tough question,” said Steve Humphries, director of business development at Medical Modeling. “There are accuracy questions regarding the (CT scans.) But I think the general appearance of the face is most likely a good depiction of what that person looked like in life.”
