Traveling Adult Health Education Programs
Freestanding adult health displays make it easy for people to visit on breaks, during lunch, or in conjunction with a special program or activity. In a brief interaction, Museum Educators can answer questions, clear up misconceptions, and make a lasting impression about the long-term consequences of everyday decisions. The display requires a 6 or 8–foot table.
Brain and Helmet Use
Only 18 percent of bicycle riders wear helmets, but wearing a bike helmet can reduce the chance of brain injuries by 85 percent. Have you ever thought about how important it is to protect your brain? Come view a real human brain. Touch a life-like brain model to understand how “squishy” and fragile the brain is. See how a helmet protects the head. Pick up a handout on how to select and properly wear a helmet. Explore what functions different areas of the brain control. Learn fascinating facts about the brain and nervous system such as: The brain itself does not feel pain. Engage in activities that simulate what it may be like to live with a brain injury.
Healthy Eating for Busy People
Learn how you can make healthy dietary choices while still enjoying your favorite foods! This exhibit provides a visually appealing display of life-like food models comparing healthy and less healthy meals. Have your questions answered about how to lower your fat intake to improve your daily diet. Discover what foods are good sources of fiber. See the hidden sugar, fat, and salt in everyday foods. The 20-pound “fat vest” lets participants gain and lose weight in seconds, demonstrating the demands extra fat puts on your body. See just how much space five pounds of fat takes up. Find out answers to common nutrition-related questions. A variety of handouts are available.
Healthy Family
This health display is centered on the theme “Living in Colorado: The Risks and the Benefits.” Designed to give families an overview of some of the health issues facing Coloradans, this colorful, inviting health display touches briefly on a number of health topics including hygiene, sun exposure, and basic human anatomy and physiology. Many hands-on activities have been included specifically for families to participate together. Visitors can compare their heart rates before and after exercise and take apart and put together a miniature torso. Real human specimens are also included and a variety of handouts are available.
Heart Health
The Healthy Heart display provides information on the basic anatomy and physiology of the heart and circulatory system. Making lifestyle choices to prevent heart disease is the focus. Visitors will view a pig heart specimen and a specimen showing a real human “clogged” artery in comparison to a “clean” artery. Common treatments for heart disease are presented including an angioplasty device, stent, and heart bypass model. Pacemakers and an implantable defibrillator are on view. The 20-pound “fat vest” lets participants put on, and take off, weight in seconds. A variety of handouts are available to guide participants in making heart–healthy choices.
Planet Fitness
This health fair display is centered on the three components of physical fitness: aerobic endurance, flexibility, and strength. Designed to give an overview of each of these components, this colorful, inviting health display touches briefly on fueling the body for physical fitness, how to incorporate fitness into a busy day, and the benefits of a healthy exercise program. Hands-on activities are included to demonstrate how easy it is to incorporate movement into your everyday life. Visitors can try a balance board to assess their core strength, learn how to balance out exercise and nutrition, and compare their heart rates before and after exercise. Real human specimens are included with this display. A variety of handouts are also available.
Tobacco
How many New Year’s resolutions have you made to quit smoking? How many times have you seen someone you love struggle to quit using tobacco products? Come learn about tobacco and its effect on the human body, why it is so addictive, and how it wreaks havoc on different organs in the body. View human specimens that show the damage smoking does to arteries and lungs. Learn ways to help your children remain smoke-free. What about secondhand smoke? What’s in cigarette smoke that makes it so deadly to non-smokers? Are cigars or “chew” safer then cigarettes? Have these and your other questions answered by a Museum Educator. A variety of handouts are also available.
Under the Influence: Drugs and Alcohol
Consider the various ways drugs and alcohol can affect your life—behind the wheel, at home, at work, and to your body. Alcohol and other drugs are involved in 50 percent of traffic fatalities, 38 percent of child abuse cases, and 62 percent of assaults. This health display lets you see the “pickling” effect alcohol has on the liver. Learn how alcohol and drugs change the way the brain functions. Learn the real costs of a DUI. Play our interactive CD-ROM game to learn when your blood alcohol content crosses the line. Discover the caloric content of alcoholic beverages. What should you do if you suspect a co-worker has a drug or alcohol problem? What can happen when a woman uses drugs, drinks alcohol, or smokes during pregnancy? Learn about these and other issues from this display and the Museum Educator. A variety of handouts are also available.
